Success Story
As an ordinary Singaporean boy who grew up in a Kampong (a village with attap houses which are wooden shacks), George Quek had a passion for art and embarked on his journey of becoming a painter in Taiwan. However, while in Taiwan, he realized that being an artist does not make economic sense as he needs to provide for his family. Moreover, he knew he had to achieve something successful with the only money he had from his devoted father, a seaman turned farmer.

With his determination to make a business out of his father’s entire savings, Quek took his first step – rolling dough to sell a popular, traditional Chinese candy called Dragon Beard, a novelty in Taiwan at that time. From his simple candy kiosk, his small food business grew and he went on to explore the Singaporean hawker-fare concept. This eventually led to his entrepreneurial success of bakery sensation and Asian food atriums today. However, his enduring voyage to his accomplishments was filled with adversities such as financial issues and partnership disagreements, all of which he was grateful for as they shaped his learning process and his leadership style and methods.
